Hi. I purchased a WNR3500Lv2 Netgear router (factory refurbished) flashed with Tomato firmware (from a company in the US, shipped to UK and brought out to Egypt by a friend) as I need it to install a VPN on my router so that VoiP will be enabled for my IP phone as this service is blocked in Egypt and the VPNs don't work on the hardware without being set up on the router itself. I only have 3G/4G mobile internet as I live in Sharm El Sheikh so I needed one with a USB modem port which I assumed this had as it said USB port! I have been playing about with it and having read the manual for this router it seems USB modem is not supported and only storage works, however, I found a thread on tomato firmware with this router here that managed to get the dongle to work. However I cannot get it to work on mine and I don't know whether the tomato firmware version I have on this router has this capability. I tried everything but it's not detecting the modem it's not finding the IP address although the router I can access on the internet. I'm using Etisalat 3G modem which works on my huwaie dongle on my old TPLink Router but etisalat dongles themselves launch a desktop app/dial up facility. However, as I'm using my huwaie dongle this doesn't launch.

I'm not a tekkie but quite good with this stuff but this has me stumped. I really need this router to be connected for my business so I can configure it for the VPN service and be able to use my IP phone. Netgear will not support this. The router has no serial number. Any ideas if this 3g modem can be supported on the tomato firmwre

thanks for any advice in laymens terms please....

Netgear WNR3500L v2 wireless N gigabit vpn router 128m flash & 128m ram with tomator firmware factory refurbished. 4 ports gigabit switch. supports openvpn & pptp 100v-24v psu.

    thanks
    Anne

on the page nas-usb.asp , do you have a 3G modem section?
If not, you may need to upgrade your router to something like Shibby or Toastman. It's possible you have an older version of tomatoUSB installed. The about.asp page provides some hints as to which version you currently are on.

However, if you do decide to change firmware you current settings will be lost (so if someone pre-configured the VPN for you it will have to be redone)

Where is this page? I cannot check the router at the moment as I'm working but will do it later, thanks.

Sorry for late reply, I'm in the router setting now and yes it does have that - however it's not recognising it:

I believe this has to do with usb_modeswitch compatibility. From what I understand is that when you plug in a 3g/4g modem to the USB port it is initially detected as a USB storage device. This is where usb_modeswitch takes over and detects the device and then changes the mode from storage device to modem. udev also plays a role as well.
    1. What is the model number of the Etisalat 3G modem model are you using?
    2. What is the Huwaie dongle model number are you using?

I thought I'd replied to this. The dongle is E3131. I'm now on Vodafone 3G. I don't have any modems from the providers as I'm on mobile network only, not asdl as yet. I just use the data sim in my own Huawei dongle slotted into my TP link router currently.

Any more advice please? Seems I now can't get ASDL in my new apartment due to a dispute with the landowner so I need to get this fixed. However, VoiP has suddenly started working on Vodafone here today but this does happen on occasion and may last for one week maximum before they block it again!

Hello Anne. This is just suggestion, but I would try what is suggested on the website I have listed below. Basically it provides a solution to switch your Huawei E3131 from Hilink mode to modem mode. The Hilink mode "automatically connects users to the Internet in as little as 15 seconds after the datacard is inserted into the USB port, without the need for a tedious dial-in process, driver installation or manual configuration." This is probably why you don't get a dial up prompt like you do with your Eitisalat modem.

    http://www.zedt.eu/tech/hardware/switch-huawei-e3131-hilink-modem-mode/

Also the following forum thread a user had problems with his/her E3131h-2 and flashed it with different firmware and it started working afterwards. I would try this as a last resort.

    http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/current-usb-3g-modem-support.35574/page-3#post-275917

Bottom line is that I think your modem is using Hilink mode. I read in the above thread that shibby's tomato firmware won't work if it's in Hilink mode.

Thanks, I've just seen this. If I change to modem mode how will this affect my current connection with my tplink router or in general? Or should it not make any difference in that it'll just allow it to be recognised by the tomato firmware on the netgear router?

I have no clue if this will work or how it will affect your current tplink router connection. This was just a suggestion based on information I've read on this forum and the website I provided you with. You could always change it back to Hilink mode if need be. Good luck!

I have a modem e3131s-2 and to run well on toamto shibby, you must modify it to non-hilink, tomato well supports modems 3g and 4g but non-hilink
I have the modem set as the second backup wan
Upload versions toamto to shibby 132 if you never need the double wan, or search Fork to kille72 firmware No. 138.12

do not forget to enter APN (name) in tomato

    Huawei E3372h Non_hilink
recommended to connect the modem to the router with an active hub usb2 (power), especially as the signal is weak cellular router it gives a little power for the modem and the modem can not be started

I have no idea what you mean in your first post pomidor! I'm not technical. I have no modem, just a router. I only have 3g network no asdl. So I have to connect via a dongle. I'm confused as to what I should be doing now too many suggestions.

I just need someone to help me set up a connection on this router. It works fine on my tplink router. I'm not technical but I can usually figure these things out. I'm at a complete loss with this and I dont want to try downloading/doing anything to the router as I bought it specifically with the firmware preinstalled so I could set up a vpn with Vypervpn router so my VoiP works as it's blocked in Egypt.

I'm using Vodafone. They have 4g here, but not on this sim card for the dongle only on a mobile network ie on your phone itself do they upgrade to 4g.

what is a hub usb2 active? i have a hub/switch aswell but i'm not using it. The router has a usb port already. Sorry your instructions are a little ambiguous. ok i've found what one is but the router has a usb port why do i need this? Are you saying just buy the hub and connect it the router and then the router will be able to detect my dongle? or will it still not find it?

Search in Egypt for some service modems can you rework because they can and e3131 and e3372 convert to non-hilink but no offense seems to me that if you are not a technician computer scientist as you write it, you can itself does not give the council a mistake in the procedure will brick your modem , so take this as you have a router e3131 and give it to someone who remodel it for non-hilink because when you have a 3g sim card to buy e3372h does not improve your connection speed compared to e3131.
Summing up the modem processing what you non-hilink is possible
a description of the processing is ok in the attached link by you, just rehashing e3131 only other firmware is needed

Sorry but the English doesn't make a lot of sense. I already said I'm not technical! If I were I'd have figured it out by now. Although I'm not a complete idiot! I need to have a USB for this router as I have no asdl so it has to be compatible with this netgear tomato firmware flashed router. As it stands it cannot detect it. I cannot connect via cable, or I would have done so a long time ago I normally have no problems setting up networks on a modem/router. Egypt block VoiP and you can only get 4G on the mobile network, not on the old sim/usb dongles this is what Vodafone have told me. The tomato firmware is specifically so I can use the VyperVPN on this router. I've been trying to sort this for a year now it's getting ridiculous. I tried the last router ASUS and it wouldn't even download the firmware as I had no cable to connect on asdl so had to send it back hence why this is preinstalled. I just want someone who is technical/an expert in this area to sort this out for me as I don't have the knowledge to do it without the risk of messing it up! I still then have to reconfigure the router for the vpn after I get it on line. If what you say is I need a non-hlink USB dongle that's fine I'll buy one but the one you mentioned hasn't got a good write up and also you have to convert it from hlink so what's the point in me buying it as I already have one!
I'm sorry but I can't really decpyher your english above very well.

only the first part of the procedure
under Windows, removing the modem from your computer to the router and you think you are at the point of exit
the longer you will be able to non-hilink need to download the appropriate converter IMEI, unreadable code
make flash a different firmware for non-hilink permanently write it yet dshboard
just ask the specialist by me

    in that link you gave
    http://www.zedt.eu/tech/hardware/switch-huawei-e3131-hilink-modem-mode/
    see section 6
Unplug and re-plug the modem for the change to take effect. Your system will re-detect the device and reinstall the drivers. You can now use it as a proper modem - in Windows
This procedure is good but relates to a different modem
    https://vutlan.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=19955732
    the need for other
    Huawei Modem Driver
    firmware
    dashboard
    maybe other imei calculator
See how many different types of modems is e3131
    easily become confused
because if You were determined to buy a modem that you entered that best by my naïve to which E3372H tomato version but only non-hilink version
you write that you can not buy, so you speech there is no sense to buy the next hilink because when you have a sim card 3g, 4g purchase the modem will not work any better
Here difficult conversion hilink on nonhilink and for damage easily
    https://routerunlock.com/download-firmware-update-huawei-e3131-hilink-normal-modem-free/
    http://www.modemunlock.com/huawei-e3131-unlock.html
    http://www.modemunlock.com/huawei-unlock-code-calculator-generator.html
So my suggestion: refer all reworking e3131 specialist in the field of mobile service
