As follow up to the comment above and my own post, Google is rolling out a play services update that fixes the network drop issues I had related to cast devices.

I don't know the exact version number, but it was flooding the network with pent up cast packets when waking from sleep. The issue has gone away entirely for me. May want to go on apkmirror.com and get the latest version to see if that helps you!

Yes, that I know (regarding Google issue with cast and fix) and I have the latest update 11.9.75). However I am not losing Wifi connectivity or Internet connectivity (which is an issue Netgear has with their recent stock firmware). Just printers going offline simply by clicking the Clients button (along with the device number dropping and increasing but not to the original number). So printers will be fine for 5 days, but as soon as I click "Clients" button, they go offline. Reboot router and they're back. No other connectivity issues with any other device as far as I can tell.

My R7000's LEDs behave the same.

  4. sn2018

    More on the LED's.
    1) USB 1 and USB 2 LED's seems to be reversed. E.g. USB 1 lights up if I have something connects to USB 2.0 port.
    2) If I press the WPS button, all the LED's except power LED will be off. If I press it again, LED's will come back.

WLAN performance on 69_2 - I have the subjective feeling that my wireless throughput / performance has declined since applying the new version - no hard facts yet, just a subjective feeling while surfing. Will check and revert to previous version if I can see differences.

Just checked there is FTP access issue in the firmware of 380.68 or even the newest 380.69.

I plugged my USB harddrive into R7000 and enable the samba share and FTP. No problem with the samba share but unable to access to the FTP by using any IDs including the admin ID (i.e. said access denied/no permission) . I also tried creating a new ID with new password but got the same hence should not a wrong password issue.

May I have any advice to solve this issue? Thanks

    ken,
have you searched the snbforums where the merlin firmware is actively discussed?
I found this with a 2 minute search.
    https://www.snbforums.com/threads/jffs-access-on-ftp.26214/

Your going to want to provide a more precise "ask".
From the lack of your ask we don't know what exactly you have tried, what settings you have applied, if there are custom scripts or even if your asking for help with WAN ftp access etc..

Can anyone tell me if there is some sort of option to enable all the features on the main index.asp? I recenty made the jump to upgrade my firware to the current 380.69_2 from 378.52_2. Back on the old version, I was able to browse both to the QOS and IPtraffic monitoring from the main index page. However, with the latest version, the main index page, I am unable to find any soft of link that I can browse over to those pages. I know the page exist, since i entered the asp name directly and teh page does come up. However, I am perplex to know why the link does not exist on the main page? Was the upgrade missing something?

The topic of where the newer versions of Merlin firmware "hid" some of the features has been discussed multiple times in this thread.
That said you have to enable the feature AND reboot for it to show up.
    See the image I attached.
    Hope that helps.

So i have this weird USB speed problem with this firmware on Netgear R7000.
Im using the latest 380.69_2 firmware on R7000 and whenever i plug in my USB hard-drive on USB 3.0 port the transfer speed is always constant 30MB/s which is kind of slow compared to stock netgear OS where i was getting around 60MB/s. Does xwrt-vortex (asus-wrt merlin) not support USB 3.0 on netgear R7000?
If anyone has the same router and same firmware i would appreciate if you could share your usb transfer speeds.

  28. slidermike

    slidermike Addicted to LI Member

You try disabling the USB 3 interference mode? Its also important to be mindful of the usb drive format & which method of remote access your using. Some of these factors also run faster than others on the router.

Can someone who has a R7000P please confirm if XWRT-VORTEX works with the R7000P (and if you dont mind state the FW ver.) ??

Yeah, there is a hardware difference between the r7000 & r7000p.
    Namely the 5ghz radio chipset.
The reason your not finding anyone running XVortex on the R7000p is because its not forked for it.
If I had an R7000P I would not be a guinea pig and try it.
If you do get it working, be glad to hear about your experience.

The base board chipset & 2.4 radio appear the same but the 5g isn't so in theory it could be loaded but possibly no 5ghz radio.
There is also the factors such as board id and stuff that I am not intimate on so it may not even load.
My guess is you might have to load a custom CFE to modify the id from R7000p to R7000.
I am not the best resource for going into unsupported territory like this.
The best alternative would be for you to take merlins opensource code and see if you could tweak it for your model.
    Basically what XVortex did.
    Good luck

Your correct. This new version has only been out for a few days, and after reading through the changelog, it looks like this is going to be quite an update to the codebase. It's certainly going to take more than a couple of days to port over.

    Hi :)

    Am i being stupid?
I cannot find any QoS options, having flashed my R7000 with this firmware.
I assumed that xwrt-vortex would have QoS because the original asuswrt-merlin has QoS.

    Hi all

    I have a question:

    Adaptative Qos in Vortex works??????

    Thanks.

  53. slidermike

    slidermike Addicted to LI Member

Adaptive QoS is Asus/Trend Micro proprietary so should not be functional in non-Asus routers.
Traditional QoS in all Asus code (not just this fork) is/has been broken for a couple years now.
Its closed source code so only Asus can fix it and they aren't.

So for an R7000, all intents and purposes there is no functional QoS.

    Hi there,

This may have been answered in the 51 pages, so please excuse me. Searching for this info in the thread is a little difficult.

There seems to be some contradictory information in the first post and a post that the first post points to.
In specific, the first post states:

However, @tigs post which is linked to by the first post states:
Which information is correct? It would be really great if the incorrect one could be updated.

Also not super clear is whether the custom CFE is useable with firmware other than Stock (e.g. would flashing back to Tomato or DDWRT once a custom CFE is installed require additional steps beyond simply flashing Tomato or DDWrt).

    Thanks!

The CFE doesn't matter to the firmware so no need to reflash the CFE if switching firmware vendors.

I don't know if it's a concrete must do but it certainly is best practice to bounce back to stock between firmware vendor changes.

I wasn't able to apply my VPN client setting with latest update. I can set everything but I can't set Server Address. As soon as I type ip the apply button refuses to work.

    edit: I added address with
    nvram set vpn_client1_addr=<ip>
    nvram commit

but, when activating VPN, it stucks with "apply settings" message and no percent progression. I have to refresh page to go on.
There is no message logged in syslog (verbosity 3 or 1, no matter).

    What can I do?

    PS: I tried with chrome/firefox/edge

    edit2: I started service with
    service start_vpnclient1

now I got these from syslog:

Finally I successfully make it work setting parameters with nvram set commands but it refuses to start from web GUI. It still hangs on Apply settings screen and still I have to remove ip address to apply changes.

To start VPN I use "service start_vpnclient1" command from ssh.
I think that there's something wrong with 380.69_2, something got touched and from changelog I can see:

    - FIXED: Router crash when importing an OpenVPN certificate
longer than 3499 characters (the supported limit)
    - FIXED: Users were allowed to enter invalid characters on
some of the OpenVPN client page fields.

Finally! Got Splunk working. It was a boneheaded move on my part. You have to enable "accepted" and "Dropped" packets on the firewall log. So, to that point; I have tons of entries showing up on the log page. Although, I have the Remote Log Server sending logs to my Splunk server. Will all these log entries showing up on the R7000 degrade my NVRAM?

Thanks for all you do. We can all be impatient and don't fully understand the time and effort it takes and that you're doing this all for free.

I have not seen mention of this through the thread, but can I give my 2.4G and 5G SSID the same name? With the stock firmware, I was able to do so and the R7000 and it appeared to work fine.

I had flashed to the latest asuswrt a few days ago, set both 2.4G and 5G networks with the same SSID, but am noticing odd performance. For example, if I am playing a YouTube video on my phone, the video does not play smoothly but keeps stopping and starting. I changed the name of one of the SSID this morning and played the same YouTube video and it plays smoothly again.

Other than that, the firmware has been great. Easy to set up, configured everything I need (just need to identify a couple additional wireless clients to set them up with a manual ip). One of the earlier posts helped me get the parental controls enabled, it's nice being able to set controls per device rather than a blanket type set up.

General best practice dictates you do not use the same ssid for 2.4 & 5ghz.
The reasoning is that 2.4 will almost always appear to be the better (Stronger) signal and thus the clients will connect to 2.4 & leave the 5ghz radio without clients.
Your best performance will come on the 5ghz radio.

Just for the sake of discussion. Isn't ASUS or RMerlin can stop their firmware to run on non-ASUS routers if they want to since not all the modules are open source?

  70. b1ggles

    b1ggles Network Newbie Member

They don't make firmware that runs on non-Asus routers, Vortex 'tweaks' it so it can.

  71. sn2018

That is what I am saying. If they put in a check or two in one of their closed source module, there is nothing Vortex can "tweak" to make it work on non-ASUS routers.

There are checks in place, and they keep getting tighter. And now the issues caused by these illegal forks has reached legal departments upstream, causing more problems for everyone involved. Some people don't realize how close to getting everyone shut down these forks are bringing us. That's all I can say for now.

By me bringing this up will not increase or decrease the chance the firmware will do more checking.

G'day all, I've been using Asuswrt-Merlin on my R7000 since 378.55 and loving it!

However from day 1 I've never ever been able to restore backed config's and it's driving me insane - luckily I document my config frequently but it'd be real nice if I could restore from my backups.

If I try to I get an Invalid file error and it doesnt matter If I try to restore on a Mac or PC or which browser I use, I get the same result.

recently I factory rest my R7000 and upgraded to 380.69_2 but the problem still persists. :(

    Any ideas?

    Hi here,

I have install my R7000 with the lastest Xwrt.
I use it to have Internet and IPTV.
I use VLAN 35 (internet) and 36 (IPTV) and enable igmp multicast.

    Internet is ok
IPTV is not ok, i have signal but i loss it at 10-15 seconds....

I have read a lot and it's say the multicast is not ok if you loss your signal.

So my question, how to activate multicast on command line or multicast is working with the latest firmware ?

    Regards,

PS: I have read another forum and it's say the version 380.57 is working for IPTV, but i dont find archive for Xwrt 380.57

My best suggestion would be to search the snbforums for users who have posted about IPTV on asusmerlin.
Since this is a fork of merlins fork you might find the answer already discussed in that forum.
A quick google with these key words "asus merlin iptv" provides several links over to the snbforums.
Maybe someone here has an answer also.

Yes i have found to snbforums, but the solution is to rollback to 380.57 but i don't find archive branch with this version, and i dont know if i find 380.57 Asus Merlin if is compatible to R7000

    :(

That's some pretty old firmware back from around Dec 2015.
I would suggest keep looking through the results and see if someone has confirmation of a work around with newer code.

Wow...cant believe I didn't find/use this firmware sooner on my R7000. I'm catching up with this thread and read about Skynet/AB-Solution. I will go over the guides inside the SNB forums but is this something worth installing? If a new wrt is released, is this something you have to keep setting up with each new release?

Last question, under wireless options, it has a xbox optimization box, but after doing some research, this only affects the older xbox 360 correct? I'm running 3 xbox ones wireless and just want to make sure what previous users have done in the past with this option. I have it enabled now but will try to disable to see if it makes any difference. My setup is wireless as I have no way to run cables at my house. However, my speeds from Comcast w/blast (200 mbps/10mbps). Any other recommendations to minimize lag/latency on my wireless setup?

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

I was trying to watch tagged IPTV on 380.68.x. IPTV on selected LAN port worked OK, but IGMP snooping not. I cannot watch IPTV through WiFi.

the optimize feature is supposed to prioritize ack packets for online gaming is my understanding.
It would not be beneficial to enable this IF you also torrent because torrent does a lot of acking also.
You just have to experiment with it off and on.

Prioritizing ACK as in Acknowledge packets by putting ACKs in the front of the upload traffic to confirm a packet is received would be considered Traffic Shaping which is part of QoS and has nothing to do with Wireless. As RMerlin has said for the XBox Optimize feature, "Technically, that option makes the router report it does not support LDPC error correction."
There is no such thing as does a lot of acking. TCP/IP protocol in it's nature requires a ACK packet be sent for each packet received, that's why with asymmetrical connections in which the upload speed is only a fraction of the download speeds, if ACKs were not prioritized, the download will slow to the same speed as the upload if the upload was being 100% utilized as the ACK's would be send out in the order of traffic but QoS moves the ACKs to the front instead. This seems to only happen on smaller upload pipes though but not with 10Mbps upload pipes on a 300Mbps download.

This is covered by the famous John Navas since the last 20 years:
    http://cable-dsl.navasgroup.com/#Asymmetry

and covered in great detail in IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) under RFC(Request For Comment) 3449:
    https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3449

Since Skynet/AB-Solution are installed on a USB drive they survive firmware updates.

You might have to reset your router. Set it up and make a new backup. I was having simiar issues and i had to reset and reconfig again and backup. Good luck.

What exactly do you mean by "reset"?

I've done multiple factory resets and tried restoring backups both before and after upgrading FW versions with no luck.

    Hi Guys,

In Merlin's release 380.69_2 he introduced an option to disable "Asus NAT Tunnel". The same option is also present in Vortexe's release with the same number. I've noticed that its radio button revert to active mode after a reboot. Is it by design?

    I'm on an R7000 with Xwrt-Vortex, release 380.69_2.

Is there someone who can check this behaviour on genuine Asus hardware, preferably an RT-AC68U?

I can confirm that the setting do survive a reboot on an RT-N66U, running Asuswrt-Merlin release 380.69_2.

I did "vi /jffs/configs/dnsmasq.conf.add" and added the line above and rebooted

seems to be working... that is the right way?

My boys have one wired XB1 and one on Wi-Fi, I use torrents and without that box ticked I've not seen any issues with performance even when the line is being spanked. Haven't bothered to try it with as no complaints.

    Don't bother.
    1. Wireguard requires Linux kernel 3.x, xwrt's firmware runs on 2.6.
    2. The R7000 only has a single-core processor, so you don't benefit from Wireguard's multi-threading (as opposed to OpenVPN's single-threading).
    3. The R7000 CPU is too weak for this.
    4. You're much better off getting a single-board computer (SBC) with a Gigabit Ethernet and a strong CPU (and ideally a proper USB3 port). Make that your Internet gateway and use the router just as an access point. I can max my 250 Mbps connection, all encrypted with Wireguard routed through a SBC (whose CPU doesn't go beyond 25% overall usage).
You can get away using just the onboard Gigabite port on a connection like mine, but you need to be a little creative. I would still advise getting a second (USB) Ethernet adapter one - that's why I recommend USB3 if you are on a 350+ Mbps connection.

I think the R7000 could run WireGuard if it was implented in the kernel.

I could be wrong, I also remembered a dual-core but didn't see it.

Today it's a question of "can", but that might change, if Asuswrt moves to a 3.x kernel. In the future (with a different kernel), it wouldn't be a question of "can", but of "how well".
For comparison, I am running a different firmware on a GL.inet AR150 (my travel router) and it only does about 15 Mbps with Wireguard, with 90+% CPU load (granted, that CPU is significantly weaker - 400 MHz if I remember correctly).
A Raspberry Pi 2B (quad core, 900 MHz) can pretty much saturate its 100 Mbps Ethernet with Wireguard, but the load is fairly high (around 70-80% at maximum speed, if I remember correctly).
An Asus Tinkerboard (quad core, 1.8 GHz) does 250 Mbps without exceeding 30% CPU usage.

Your bogomips is correct for the dual core 1ghz you.
    2000/2=1000 each.
I'm not sure if this firmware has top but if it does and you run "top" followed by "1" you should get top stats for each core.
I know it works in dd-wrt.
No matter what the cat response, this is a dual core cpu.

The latest firmware does have "top" and top shows 2 cores.
