Asuswrt-Merlin on Netgear R7000

I'm apologize if this has been answered in the 40 pages prior to this post but does xwrt mess with the WAN MAC address? I flashed the previous build over dd-wrt (I did a factory reset along with the flash) and ended up with some weird MAC address that wouldn't get a WAN connection. I wound up flashing back to stock then back to dd-wrt.

I would really like to give xwrt a shot but this behavior has me spooked.

Why didn't you flash this firm once you went to stock instead of ddwrt?
Last, what question did you have?

I'm not familiar with Strongswan, but XWRT-Vortex has an option to select IPSEC. If you have OpenVPN set up on your router, your iPhone OpenVPN client should be able to access your webcams without port forwarding (Using IP's).

My $.02 and that's about all it's worth.

The weird behavior with a messed up MAC (along with an annoyed wife asking why the WiFi was down) made me recover as quickly as possible to a working state which in this case was DD-WRT.

My question was this: is getting an incorrect WAN MAC address something that is expected? Like did I skip a step flashing Xwrt? The strangest thing is when I tried manually setting the MAC to the address printed on the bottom of the router, the change would not take effect.

Your case of a messed up MAC is the first I recall hearing.
Though most of us upgrade from stock first (my assumption).

  6. Makaveli

This was most likely your problem.

You should be flashing from stock firmware not custom to custom.

This is mentioned on the first post.

Can someone please tell me if there is a way to check if the custom CFE flashed successfully or not. I followed all the posts in the thread on the topic and flashed it but it didn't reboot by itself. I rebooted manually but can't tell any difference. Thanks in advance.

Why did you flash a custom CFE if you don't understand what it's for?

I understand what it is for. I want to know if there is a way to check if it flashed correctly or not.

I ssh to the router in putty and entered this command and got this

    Makaveli@NETGEAR-D601:/tmp/home/root# nvram get bl_version
    1.0.0.0

    I'm on the stock CFE.

Can you do the same and see what its results show?

I also get 1.0.0.0 but under tools in the GUI the bootloader is 1.0.2.1. NVM - I tried restarting the router with the WPS button pressed down and the power led blinked fast and reset everything. The changes I made with cfeedit are shown in the gui so I guess it worked after all, it just needed to be reset. Thanks for the help.

My mistake. I assumed that just doing a flash+reset from within dd-wrt would work. I re-flashed using the stock firmware and it seems that XWRT is now working. So far it seems pretty good, the only annoyance is the one admin user at a time thing. Is there a way to disable that?

Currently I have one major problem. After some time after copying files over samba into USB 3.0 pendrive it gets corrupted.
    Tried NTFS, ext3,4,2. Same behavior.
    Currently runnin' latest build 380.65.

    Solutions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

I had re-occurring issues with my router where the 2.4Ghz band will disappear at random times and it does not whow up even after multiple resets (through router page, physical off switch or pulling power cord). It will reappear later (I have a scheduled reboot at 3am everyday) and then it will happen again after a few days/weeks. I did a search and the solution for some is to do a factory reset and re-enter the settings from scratch. I did that when I upgraded to the latest firmware (v380.65) last weekend. Yesterday, the 2.4Ghz band is missing again and all my devices that can only access that band cannot connect to internet.

Any other suggestion on how to fix this issue?

Yes, Pi-Hole also works fine on R7000 (and all other Asus routers as well). You can specify IPv4 and IPv6 DNS addresses in the firmware. (and any router that lets you specify a DNS server for WAN :) )

Interesting ramblings of a madman: So I tried selecting DDNS via the GUI. I wanted to try ASUS DDNS. However, when I selected ASUS DDNS, my OpenVPN Server failed to start. After much forum searching and Log analysis, I think I found out why. Apparently, ASUS.com (DDNS) listens on port 443 (it's bound to that port). I have my OpenVPN set up on TCP Port 443 (to get through firewalls) and because 443 is already in use with ASUS.com, I get the "Address already in use" error message in my OpenVPN log i.e. server failed to start.

I haven't figured out how to do it yet, but if you enter the Linux command: SO_REUSEADDR, this allows other sockets to bind to this port, unless there is an active listening socket bound to the port already (not sure if the DDNS socket is actively listening). This enables you to get around those "Address already in use" error messages when you try to restart your OpenVPN server after a crash.

Of course, I'm no programmer. I'm sure people much smarter than me i.e. Merlin/XVortex may end up correcting me. That said, anyone know if it's possible to change the ASUS.com port to UDP 443?

AB-Solution is no firewall. It is a hosts based ad-blocker.
A firewall is a completely different thing.

How did you get pi hole to run on R7000?

  39. cybrnook

It's the same as any router.

But.......... Are you asking to install Pi-Hole ONTO the R7000? Or use a raspberry-pi (as pi-hole is meant to be) and assign it's static IP's to the WAN DNS boxes in the router?

If you are talking about installing it on the OS of the R7000, I have no idea.

I don't think that would work as PI-Hole needs its own IP on the network, and it would attempt to use the routers IP. Not sure that would work.......

The link to the Netgear R7000 OEM firmware (V1.0.4.18_1.1.52) in asus trx format is no longer working. Can someone please provide a link to it. Thanks in advance.

  41. Liseeker

    Liseeker Network Newbie Member

From v.380.65, I was able to reflash Netgear OEM using the link on page 1 of this thread earlier today with no issue whatsoever.

I like the layout of XVortex-Merlin but there are some DNS leaks in my case when using VPN, no matter what I tried.

So I have been trying Kong's DD-WRT on the second R7000 unit over the last couple of days, and fortunately the DNS leaks stop. Its layout, however, is more comprehensive and intimidating for users whom I have in mind.

Show us your VPN, DNS pages so we can see if you configured it correctly.
I had VPN working fine on the last code from xvortex.
Currently I am running in AP mode so I haven't tested this build for VPN.
My leak tests for previous version we're good. No leaks.

  43. Liseeker

    Liseeker Network Newbie Member

Actually, I want to take the opportunity to find out more about DD-WRT since I am already there. I don't want to flash back to XVortex for now.

However, I got the feeling that we are talking at different wavelengths here because I was referring to the term DNS leak perhaps incorrectly.

My VPN works fine. It's just that I don't like seeing several DNS names popping up when I ran the DNS leak check inside XVortex.

Might be a strange question but I'll give it a go....

Apart from missing almost £150 from my bank account is there anything that I would gain from moving over from my R7000 flashed with this (rock solid) firmware to an Asus RT-AC3200....?
I can appreciate that perhaps the AC3200 might be a little more robust with the two 5Ghz channels but I'm not sure if hardware wise the router or UI functionality could be different, in a good way...?

Thinking about that router as it is on offer at the moment and then the R7000 could be used as a AP upstairs.

  45. Frank2

    Frank2 Serious Server Member

If your clients support it, you will get faster connection speeds; 802.11ac 3x3 technology for maximum throughput (3167 Mbps) which is smoking fast. Other than that, I don't know if there are any more Pro's. That said, It is a beast of a router. If I had $188 burning a hole in my pocket, I might be tempted to get one. However, I'm pretty satisfied with my R7000 and unfortunately, I don't have any money burning a hole in my pocket.

I can't seem to leave well enough alone. I remoted into my R7000 from afar. To be more secure, I checked off remote web access via https. When I enter my WAN IP address I can't get back into the router (http or https). If I VPN to my router and use local access (https://192.168.1.1), it takes me to the Asus AICloud splash page where I can enter my user name and password, but I can no longer access the router GUI. I can only access the shares on my local network. WHAT HAVE I DONE????

  47. Makaveli

    Makaveli Serious Server Member

I would never leave the router open to WAN Access.

Quite a few people who thought they had strong passwords got hacked on SNB doing this.

VPN in to the router or even RDP to a machine in your network.

Leaving router open to WAN Access you are asking for trouble.

    And for Dibbles.

The AC3200 does have an issue with Limited NVRAM space. So I would chose the AC3100 over it for that reason.

Thanks for the advice regarding the A3200, much appreciated.

As yet I have managed to resist temptation as whilst it might have some value it doesn't seem enough over the R7000 to then just use the Netgear as an AP.

I suppose part of my reasoning is knowing that I could, for the cost of that router, build up a cheap x86 box with a CPU which supports AES instructions and then run pfsense and use that as a router with full hardware VPN support. That is something that I'll not get from a consumer router.

Since finding a Merlin based firmware for the R7000 I do love the UI and the router does not seem to be as sluggish as it once was with the original firmware.

But either a mATX or ITX x86 option would be the wisest choice over another consumer router.

  49. Frank2

    Frank2 Serious Server Member

Yeah, I know, shoulda coulda woulda. I did need to remote in from afar to set up my VPN as it was misconfigured. I was hesitant to shut off WAN access completely in case I needed to tweak a setting. Once VPN access worked fine, I was going to kill the Wan access. Unfortunately, I killed any access. My VPN works fine but I'm unable to access the GUI via any protocol (http/https/VPN/FTP, etc). If I VPN to my router and enter local address, I end up on the AICloud page vice the GUI page. Not sure how to undo this.

  50. slidermike

My guess is that the VPN IP scope is like 10.10.1.X and the routers LAN scope is 192.168.1.x
For the router to allow local access your device needs to be on the LAN and use the local IP scope.
Have a local person share their desktop and try that.

Kind of off topic but would XWRT work on an R6700 if the boardID was changed to identify as an R7000? Has anyone tried this?

A friend of mine has 2 R7000 and 1 R6700 that he wants to use in a mesh setup and wants to standardize on one firmware.

According to WikiDevi are essentially the same:

    https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_R6700
    https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_R7000

These two links show that both routers have the exact same CPU and broadcom chipset. The only difference seems that the R6700 is missing a USB2.0 port and the 2.4Ghz runs at N450 instead of N600.

  52. Makaveli

    Makaveli Serious Server Member

I spoke to someone on the SNB forum about this and he said it should be possible if you change the ID. I said give it a shot and let us know if it was successful but never saw a follow up yet.

Someone will have to try it and hope it doesn't brick the device.

R7000 has been acting strangely in the past month. A few weeks ago both radios became disabled.
I re-enabled them and upgraded the firmware to 380.63_2. The other day, after loss of wi-fi signal, I noticed that only the power light was on. I rebooted with the same results. I finally determined that the stealth mode was enabled as well as the radios were disabled as well.

    Has anyone experienced this behavior?
Any suggestions to resolve other than resetting the router and upgrading to the latest fw?

I noticed that when the R7000 is in AP mode and if you connect to the WAN that there is no activity light enabled even though the port is working properly. Is there a simple command to enabled the activity light, or is this a bug with the firmware? Thank you for any insight into this.

Ever find a link? I am also interested in this trx format firmware. For now I have an older version which I'll be using when I want to switch.

I did just that last night and everything seems to work just fine.

Might be switching back to DD-WRT Kong though because of the router having issues mounting my external 8 TB Seagate Expansion Drive. At first it was formatted with exFat which for whatever reason the router had a hard time mounting. I then formatted it to NTFS which mounted fine. Then me being me and fixing what's not broke I format the drive to EXT4 to see if there would be any performance gains in transfer speeds the router once more would not mount it. Then I format it back to NTFS and once again I'm having issues where the router does not want to mount the drive. Can't say I've had these issues with DD-WRT Kong.

Also, this is my first time mounting drives over a router, is it normal to only get 30 mbs read speeds off router mounts? The drive is an external USB 3.0 over gigabit.

Do you have UPNP selected? If so, the R7000 will automatically manage all necessary ports to include your QNAP.
I have a QNAP as well and I have UPNP selected (although I plan to disable soon). My QNAP works fine. You may want to adjust your port range as I see you have yours ending at 5000 and the QNAP Passive FTP uses 55536-56559. If you want to manually configure ports, QNAP uses the following ports:
    • FTP - 21 by default and configurable.
    • Passive FTP port - 55536 ~ 56559 by default and configurable.
    • SSH - 22 by default and configurable.
    • SMTP - 25 by default and configurable.
    • Web Server/HTTP - 80; HTTPS - 8081 by default and configurable.
    • Netbios/SAMBA - 137, 138, 139, 445.
    • SSL/HTTPS - 443 by default and configurable.

  75. Frank2

I don't have my QNAP manage my DDNS. I let my R7000 manage my DDNS. If you are using RMerlin/XVortex FW, you have many choices for DDNS on the R7000. Try using your router (vice QNAP) for DDNS. I'm pretty sure it will work fine.
Are you trying to access the QNAP GUI from your LAN or from outside your LAN i.e. WAN?

Still getting disconnections every now and again, it seems to not be the wifi thats the problem, but something else dropping out, like the lan/DHCP or something, happens mostly when playing a game of clash royale or watching a long youtube video over my wifi, but its not the wifi because the phone is still connected, The device just gets no internet, no one else is effected, apart from if they also try to watch a long youtube video, with the youtube app, i have to turn the phones wifi off then on again in order to keep playing the video or game, its annoying and its happening on everything, laptops tablets, mostly the phones are the most effected...

Ill never buy a Netgear product. My R7000 died after 9 months of use. No reliable products.
Ubiquiti Edgerouter X with Ubiquiti UAP AC Lite equals happy customer.

For some reason with version 380.65 When wireless mac is used the number of visible wireless routers in the Site survey is less. Any ideas ?

If you've only had it for 9 months then you're still within your warranty period. Just get a replacement unit from Netgear. With every mass produced item there are a certain number of units with issues, that's just reality.

I've had my R7000 for over 2 years now so it's not like they're not reliable.

If they do a straight swap you will be good. However if they test the device and get it to boot and see a non standard firmware on it you may be SOL.

I sincerely doubt they will do more than try to plug it in. If the unit is truly dead there shouldn't be an issue.

Maybe i was out of luck but based on many reviews over the Internet i will not ever buy another Netgear product and I advise the other to NOT BUY.
The problem it is they dont honor warranty based on serial numbers and its one year only. I can't accept that.

If that is unacceptable to you then by all means stay away from their products.

For me everything has been working plus I don't always trust reviews on the internet from random people how do you know that person even has a clue what they are doing?

If you are a fan of this firmware your next step will be an Asus router.

Yeah, same with me. My R7000 has been working fine for over 2 years now (with RMerlin/XVortex FW) The only time it failed me is when I tweaked settings I should have left alone.

Same here. I was an early adopter of the R7000, (my first Netgear router), and it's been going strong since late 2013. Had issues with many of the early OEM firmwares, until I found a stable one, but the hardware has been spot on. Just as solid running with the XVortex firmware, (which I've only been running since the announcement of the current ver), but with the bonus of a few nice features that that I'd wanted since the kids started using the internet more heavily.

Would def still recommend the R7000.

Hello, i dont know if i can post problems here but ill try ....

I used firmware 380.58 on my R7000 for i while without problems, but today i wanted to use it for a project which can only use 3g as a wan connection. I have a Huawei e392 usb dongle so i tried it but it didnt work. So i updated to the latest version (380.65) and it worked.

But it wasnt stable, some sudden reboots, and after every reboot all my settings where gone, it did a complete reset. So i tried 380 .64 , .63 , .62 and .61 which gave me the same results.

First i thought it was the usb dongle that was using to much power at startup, but also without usb dongle connected, after every reboot my settings where gone.

Then i tried dual wan with usb as fail over, and everything is working fine now.
So if dual Wan is off and Wan is set to usb, every reboot all settings are gone.
You can test that also without usb dongle.
If i set dual Wan on, everything is fine, even when primary Wan is set to usb.

after that i did test which settings results, in being quickest online.

Best results i get is when i set Primary Wan to Wan and Secondary Wan to usb
detect interval: 5 seconds and failover execution time: 2 times.

I hope this will help someone, and i am also curious why it is resetting everything when dual wan is off?

    Thanks in advance

    UPDATE:
today i tested the same on an Asus AC88U with Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.380_3341, no problems at all.
So it is not on original Asus Firmware, or at least not on that version.

Like many have stated, my R7000 is also going strong! The unit has good hardware. I purchased it early in the release cycle and despite the horrible experience with Netgear's official firmware support, the router modding community has been amazing. (Merlin, Shibby, Toastman, BrainSlayer, Kong, Xvortex, etc).

Since that update is minor I doubt it will be ported.

He usually sticks to full version releases.
